Thinking about a new boiler? Everything you need to know!
Thinking about a new boiler? Should you retain your existing set-up or install a new system? When it comes to choosing a new boiler, there are many considerations and choices to make before going ahead.
The type of boiler you have installed in your home should make a positive difference to your lifestyle, whether this means freeing up space, delivering improved flow rates or providing a constant flow of hot water.
The most common types of boilers
Combi boilers
Thanks to their space-saving features and efficiency, combination or ‘combi’ boilers are fast becoming the preferred options for homeowners. They now account for over half of domestic boiler installations every year. Highly efficient and compact, a combi boiler is a single unit, which generates all the heating and hot water for the household. Combi boilers heat water straight from the mains, so there is no need for a hot water storage cylinder or cold water storage tank in the loft or roof space. This also means that hot water is delivered by mains pressure, so you can have a powerful shower without the need for a separate pump.
System boilers
System boilers are similar to regular boilers but integral components such as the expansion vessel and heating pump are built into the boiler itself. They will still require a hot water cylinder but you will not need the feed and expansion tank. The hot water in a system boiler provides heat for the radiators as well as heating the water inside the hot water cylinder. This means installation can be carried out more quickly and tidily, plus the internal components are covered by the manufactures guarantee.
Regular boilers
Sometimes called conventional boilers, regular boilers are suited to older and larger homes. There is typically a feed an expansion tank located in the loft space that is used to fill the boiler and radiators with water.
Regular boilers will require the system to have a separate hot water cylinder that supplies the hot water to all the outlets in the property. Pumps can also be installed to provide good flow rates where lots of water is required such as power showers.
Oil boilers
Oil boilers are less commonly found in the UK compared to their natural gas counterparts, however they remain an attractive option for those properties that are not connected to the natural gas network. Most oil boiler appliances are fed by a supply of stored oil which is kept in a tank (externally to the property). The benefit of this is that the homeowner is free to shop around for a good deal on fuel and is not tied to one supplier.
What type of oil boilers are available?
Oil fired boilers do practically everything their conventional gas fired counterparts can, and just as with gas boilers you can choose from conventional heat only or combination oil boilers.
All new oil boiler installations will utilise condensing technology and adhere to the latest efficiency guidelines. Condensing oil boilers are designed to recycle the heat with an extra heat exchanger so that the hot exhaust gases are used to pre-heat the water in the boiler system, therefore reducing energy consumption and costs.
